North Peak is considered the highest sandstone peak in Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area. It is 23 feet or so shorter than Mt. Wilson. The extraordinary views from the summit extend across the entire Red Rock and Las Vegas.
You can hike the mountain any time of the year. It starts to 4.8 miles up Rocky Gap Road, high-clearance vehicles can usually make the first 1.5 miles, but several spots on the upper part of the road require a 4WD car.
The hike follows the spur path to the North Peak Path, which heads east to the slope. At the ridge, the route leads east to the peak. From North Peak, it's a few hundred yards to an incredible overlook into the Ice Box Canyon. Be sure to bring a windbreaker. It usually is windy at the peak.
One of the more strenuous mountain trails, this hike takes you through a pinyon-juniper forest and brings you to the top of the Red Rock Escarpment. Portions of this trail are unmarked and require scrambling.
Starting at Willow Spring Picnic Area, hike Rocky Gap Road to the Bridge Mountain Trail Junction. Follow Bridge Mountain Trail for 1.10 miles until you get to the fork where the North Peak Trail starts. Follow North Peak to the summit of a limestone hill. See the information desk at the Visitor Center for a detailed description.
