Calico Hills are a mountain range that offers a scenic view near the heart of Las Vegas, Nevada. Often called the grouping of colorful sandstone formations from north of the entrance to the Scenic Loop Road. It includes the popular Calico Tanks trail and Redcap Peak.
It is one of the most colorful and interesting geological features in Red Rock Canyon. These distinct crimson hills began as red dunes over 180M years ago, the remains of a dune field thought one of the largest to ever form on earth.
The trail runs along the base of the Calico Rocks from Calico Basin to Sandstone Quarry. Distance is variable since the course can be accessed either end or from the two Calico parking areas. In addition, aside trail runs from the fee booth parking lot and connects with this trail (2 – 6 miles, easy to moderate).
Take the turnoff before the Red Rock Park entrance and enjoy the diverse desert colors and a few really nice trails with cool colorful rock formations.
