This tram ride was very cool. It felt very New York.


I love all the random public art in vegas  The streets are filled with all these status and unique things  This is the Giant Typewriter Eraser  I have no idea why it is here and no idea why this is a thing but it is there and it is cool to see 

Claes Oldenburg and Coosje van Bruggen are known for their monumental sculptures that are super sized versions of everyday objects  If you re from the Bay Area  you ll be familiar with  Cupid s Arrow  on the Embarcadero just beneath the Bay Bridge  Typewriter Eraser  Scale X  is one such example  Even if you re old enough to remember having used typewriters  like I did for my college applications  you might be familiar with correction ribbons but not typewriter erasers  Claes was fascinated with these as a kid  and this work is one of three in the U S  paying homage to them  Incidentally  I ve seen both  One is in Washington  DC  yelp com biz photos nati      and the other is in Seattle  review forthcoming  Here at Aria  formerly known as CityCenter  it s a bit of an afterthought as it s sandwiched into an outdoor pedestrian path and completely overshadowed by the hotel towers surrounding it  Still  it s a welcome burst of color and an instantly recognizable hit if you re familiar with Claes Coosje s work 

The Artistic Side of the Las Vegas Strip      What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas  That includes the sculptures and other works of public art that elevate the Las Vegas Strip to an artistic value  One of them is  The Giant Typewriter Eraser   The husband and wife team of Claes Oldenburg and Coosje Van Bruggen brought this stainless steel and fiberglass statue into the World in 1999  It is now alive in the City Center Fine Art Collection  This work of art is a 19 foot and 4 inches tall sculpture that   depicts a giant red and blue typewriter eraser with giant blue brush bristles turned upward  If one didn t know it was a typewriter eraser  they could mistake it for a flat drum with a giant feather leaning towards the Aria      Where is  The Giant Typewriter Eraser   It resides along the Upper Aria Walkway that bridges the Aria to the Las Vegas Strip  If you are heading northbound on the Las Vegas Strip between Park MGM and the Aria you want to be mindful of the CVS  A few hundred feet north of it  the sidewalk curves to the west towards the Aria  By means of the escalator or elevator you must ascend to the upper level  Immediately after reaching the second level there is a junction of the Aria bound and Crystals bound walkways  You need to continue on the Aria bound walkway and it is immediately on the left and in the shadow of the Waldorf Astoria  formerly the Mandarin Oriental       From my experience spending time here focused on the  Giant Typewriter Eraser  the Academy Award winning viewpoints to see   this headlining public art is toward the west and south  Facing west  the Aria tower provides a dramatic background to the sculpture  It really is dramatic taking in the sight of the futuristic and luxurious Aria tower in the background of a simplistic and outdated typewriter eraser  And facing west the Aria provides an awe inspiring background at sundown when the sun reflects against the glass and at nightime when it is all lit up  The pictures below was taken in daylight  Finally facing south  when you look up  it is a neat sight to see the magnificently giant Waldorf Astoria towering above a giant blue eraser with its bristles aimed towards the sky  A third way to take in the  Giant Typewriter Eraser  is looking down at the descriptive plaque that tells the story of the sculpture      If you are interested in seeing this sculpture  I recommend seeing it as part of a self guided Las Vegas Strip Public Art Tour  I am impressed with the amount of public art along the Las Vegas Strip corridor  Here is where  The Giant Typewriter Eraser  would be found on a northbound tour of the Las Vegas Strip public art  That location would be between  The Bliss Dance Sculpture  in The Park to the south  across from T mobile Arena  and  Glacia  in Crystals to the north  In conjunction with the sundry of public art along the Strip that also includes  The Big Edge at City Center  and  A Gift from the Earth  at the Bellagio  and  Tulips  as far north as The Wynn   The Giant Typewriter Eraser  creates a fantastic experience that ought to leave you with the impression that what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas and in your memories

We appreciate your requiring everyone to wear a mask and asking them to cover their noses. This was a great security measure. The casino's effort to seperate players was a major step up from the other casinos.

If you have more than 100 000 dollars, Aria City Center is an amazing place.


There are many things you can do on the strip. It is bright and lively.


Public Art in Las Vegas   Alana found this landmark last year when she was on vacation with her husband  She did some research and found out that this  Giant Typewriter Eraser  Scale X  was created by the same husband and wife team  Claes Oldenburg and Cooseje van Bruggen  who made  Cupid s Span  that we saw in San Francisco    Wow Location  upper walkway of Aria Hotel  across from the Shops at Crystals This is an interesting piece of Public Art that a certain generation could relate to  Yes  I know what this    I used one when I wrote my term papers in college    uhg    We had ribbons that we manually had to change on the typewriter    We didn t have White out at the time  so we used erasers that looked like this   circular  with a brush at the end to remove the dust  Haha 

Do you know what this is     A typewriter eraser    With the age of computers  there is hardly any need for erasing typing mistakes anymore    the Delete button is so much less messy and more efficient I randomly saw this in Las Vegas while my husband   I were roaming    We had gotten off one of the free trams from our hotel    We were headed to the Bellagio via The Shops at Crystals    So  between that tram and The Shops at Crystals is where this sculpture is located    It is on the pedestrian promenade in front of the words  Gallery Row Shops     You will not be able to view this from Las Vegas Blvd  you need to get up to the walkway This was created by married couple Claes Oldenburg and Coosje van Bruggen    They are known for creating ordinary objects on a large scale   This is the third sculpture I saw within three weeks in three different cities    They have works in many cities and countries    Luckily  the three places I went to had their art displayed publicly This Typewriter Eraser  Scale X is super large    Looks just like the real deal    I knew exactly what it was when I saw it    I had to look up the artist when I got home and was surprised it was by the same couple who designed Cupid s Span in San Francisco  CA and Big Sweep in Denver  CO    These artists are quickly becoming my favorites  Believe it or not  there are a total of three of these Typewriter Eraser sculptures created by Oldenburg   van Bruggen    One is in Washington D C  and the other is in Seattle  WA    The one in Seattle is identical to this one in Las Vegas    This sculpture is 19 ft  4 in  tall    It is pretty with it s red wheel and blue brush
